Rural Schools’ Hurling Final 2015

Match Report by Tomás Cronin 3rd class:

On Thursday the 11th of June seven brave men played Knocknagree.  Seven brave men did Rathcoole proud.  Seven brave men made a nail-biting match.

The weather was good for hurling that day – dry and overcast.  The starting team was made up of Diarmuid, Patrick, Seán, Donnacha, Jamie, Jack and Brian.  The subs were Ryan, Tomás, Adam and Daniel.  The match was played in Dromtarriffe GAA pitch.  Some great goals were scored by Bryan, Jamie and Donnacha.  There were also some great blocks by Seán, Diarmuid and Patrick.  At half-time Rathcoole were down by one point.

The second half was very intense.  Some great points were scored.  Rathcoole battled all the way.  Sadly when the final whistle blew Rathcoole had lost by one point!

The final score was Knocknagree 4-4 to Rathcoole 4-3

Thanks to Miss Fahy and Mrs. Collins for training us all year.

Well done lads.  We were so proud of your skill and sportsmanship!

“Let’s Go” on School Tour!

Our School Tour 2015

By Third and Fourth Class

Our School Tour this year took us to Let’s Go at Mallow Sports Complex.

We all had to get up super early to be on the bus for 8:20am on Monday 15th June. We didn’t even mind the early start. Luckily the day was dry and the forecast was good. We brought a large lunch with lots of drinks and treats to keep our energy levels up. As is necessary for a day out during the Irish summer, some of us brought raingear and others sunscreen.

Thankfully the raingear was not needed!

We got to Mallow at around 9:00am and we got organised into our groups and met our group leaders. We got to put away our bags and get busy with some activities.

During the day we got to do Go-Karting, Zorbing, dancing in the Disco Dome, Climbing ladders, obstacle courses,  climbing Air Mountain,  playing Uni-Hoc and Human Fus-Ball and sliding on the Super Slide .

The two most popular activities as voted for by Third and Fourth Class are:

Air Mountain and Zorbing.

Air Mountain

Air Mountain is like a bouncy castle where you dress up in helmets and jump on the centre of the castle. If one person jumps on the mountain, the others are thrown off. The aim is to try and get to the top of the air mountain. It is very hard to stay standing up. It was great fun being thrown off the mountain and flying through the air.

The zorbing ball is a large translucent rubber ball. You crawl head first into the ball. Inside there are straps to go around your securely strap you in. You have to hold onto two handles and make a star shape. There is another person strapped in opposite.  The ball rolls down the hill with both people inside. There was lots of screams and laughter on the way down.

We really enjoyed all the other activities too. There are too many to describe in detail here. It was a day that we really enjoyed and that will always remember.

Here are some pictures of 1st & 2nd Class in action on the tour:

DSC_0250IMG_20150610_113544Congratulations to all our young athletes who represented St. Brendan’s so well at the Cork City Sports this week.

The temporary replacement venue at CIT caused major traffic congestion in Bishopstown, but the delayed start and extra-long day didn’t deter our team!  Well done to all who participated, and especially our race-winners and County Final qualifiers.

Here they are in the hall with their haul of trophies…IMG_20150612_123258

Victory at Rural Schools Final

Wednesday May 13th 2015 was a very memorable day for the Girls of Rathcoole, as that was the day we went to Knocknagree for the Duhallow Rural Schools’ Girls’ Football Final. Everyone in the class supported us all the way, with flags and banners flying.  It was a lovely, sunny day in Knocknagree, and it turned out to be a brilliant match.  Rathcoole were delighted to come out on top – the final score was Rathcoole 8-4 and Lyre 4-7.

At the end of the match there were cheers for our opponents, and lots of celebrations for Rathcoole! IMG_4140 IMG_4142 IMG_4143 IMG_4144

To make the day even better, Mrs. O’Connor the Principal gave us NO HOMEWORK!

by Jenny Kelleher and Rebecca O’LearyIMG_4145The Corkman had a great report on the Final:

 LYRE 4-7

A storming first half display guided Rathcoole to a thrilling win over Lyre in the 10-a-side girls final.  Plaudits to both sides on excellent scores yet Rathcoole were just better balanced and had more zip in their step.  A dominant opening spell laid the platform for Rathcoole with Taragh Casey, Jenny Kelleher, Heather O’Connor and Una Healy finding the net.

On the restart, Rathcoole didn’t have it their own way; Lyre mounted a concerted series of attacks and green flags for Elizabeth Philpott, Katie and Niamh O’Connor.  The most serious of questions were being asked of RAthcoole yet they survived with Rebecca O’Leary showing brilliant defensive duties late in the proceedings.

RATHCOOLE: Sarah Murray, Precious Twomey, Rebecca O’Leary, Jenny Collins, Sarah Linehan, Heather O’Connor (1-2), Una Healy (2-1), Cara Brophy, Jenny Kelleher (2-0), Taragh Casey (3-1), Alex Ducey, Cathy Byrnes, Claire Lyons, Emma Lehane, Katie Linehan”

Success at the Sponsored Walk & 5K Run

The Parents Association of St. Brendan’s N.S., Rathcoole recently organised a sponsored walk and 5k run in aid of the school. This was held on Sunday 8th March 2015 and was a tremendous success! Many people participated in both the walk and the 5K run and a good day was had by all. We would like to thank our ever active and much appreciated Parents Association for all of their hard work in the lead up to the event.

Here are a few snaps taken on the day. If you were one of the many in attendance, you might just find yourself featured!

Sensational School News

This Wednesday, we had a hurling and camogie blitz. The boys team played St Lachteen’s, Dromagh, Rockchapel and Freemount. Although we played our best, unfortunately we lost the games.  The girls team played Lyre, Knocknagree, Kilbrin and Meelin. The girls won one of their matches. Well done girls! This Thursday, we played two football matches in Canovee. The teams went on a bus and they had a great day out. Even though they got many scores and played really well together as a team, they were just beaten by Canovee.

For this year’s Green Schools theme, we are focusing on energy. We are trying very hard to save energy – we are turning off the lights when we leave the room, we shut the doors to keep in the heat, we turn off the whiteboards and the computers when they are not being used and much more! At home, you could save energy by turning off lights and all electronics. Do your best to try and save energy at home!

Today we found out the results of the Sherkin Island Competition. St. Brendan’s had lots of winners! The winners from Junior Infants were Hannah Casey, Lily Cassidy, Aaron Finn and Caraiosa Foley. The winners from Senior Infants were Conor Singleton, Sophie Twomey, Thomas Cassidy, Emily Morris-Murray and David O’ Riordan. They each won a sticker pack and colouring books.
